Natural Fibers, Natural Colors

Cotton, cultivated in Peru, grows in a unique palette of natural colors including white, beige, brown, chocolate and mauve, without the use of chemicals of any kind, as it has for thousands of years.

As steward of this unique genetic resource, The Native Cotton Project of Peru, with the support of the Peruvian Government, UNESCO and private institutions has recovered a wide range of naturally colored cotton fiber, including cream, beige, brown, rust, chocolate, mauve, avocado and other earthy tones.  No dyes, chemicals or other synthetic processes have been used to grow, soften or color the fibers.  This exquisite pigmentation is achieved organically, in a chemical -free environment.  Naturally colored fiber reduces chemical pollution on the field, in the factory and in the home..

THE REVIVAL OF COLORED  COTTON

Peruvian Alpaca

For over 8000 years, the graceful Andean alpaca has dominated the highest mountains of the New World, grazing on wild pastures 4000m above sea level.

I
n a joint venture with a local NGO, Naturtex has established the first organic alpaca farm, comprising nearly 7,500 hectares, certified organic since 1995.  Shorn yearly, some 2,000 alpacas yield a wide range of naturally colored baby and fleece fibers for yarns and sweaters, first launched by Greenpeace from their German headquarters in 1998.

As a  Fair Trade initiative, this project rewards Andean pastoralists with equal prices for white and colored fibers, this latter often rejected by the industry, eroding the bio-diversity of the indigenous camelid populations.  Our KhT Alpaca is the finest certified organic fiber in the Andes.
